Better to skip or guess a multiple choice question on the SAT?

What I understand is that if you guess and answer wrong, there is a penalty, like half a point or something, i forget, and if you just leave it blank there are no points deducted. but if you dont lose points by skipping questions, wouldnt you just be able to leave the whole multiple choice part blank and not get penalized for it?
